The nights are getting darker and fall is on it’s way. At c.off we are preparing for a release of a new publication in October, related to our work with (im)perfect choreographies and KROPPSFUNKTION (choreo-abilities). In our space at Körsbärsvägen in Stockholm we are also preparing for a festival. As one of two partners and venues, together with Weld, we welcome the first edition of My Wild Flag the 7-10th of September.
MWF – My Wild Flag is an international dance and choreography festival. The first year of many to come, MWF consists of local and international acts and scenarios that proposes contemporary choreographic and artistic work. Bringing communities together and joining in social choreographies as well as works devoted for the stage. MWF wants to meet current urgencies where bodies, thinking and beings disturb and embrace the ways we perceive the world.
My Wild Flag is curated by Karina Sarkissova and Pontus Pettersson. We asked them to tell us a little more about how My Wild Flag started and what kind of space they wish to create during the festival:
“Pontus invited Karina for a talk about creating more space for queer choreography and initiatives in Stockholm. We spent hours talking about what we feel that we lack, and how we before have been fulfilled in the dance scene, both community wise and in an artistic way. Karina have been living in Amsterdam, where she was part of a group organizing an autonomous queer festival called Queeristan, and also been closely engaged in the Amsterdam dance maker scene. It was somehow smooth and playful and initiatives were embraced in the community, making things constantly emerge.
The curational work in close collaboration between us creates very interesting topics we meet while we go. We enter politics of gender, of taste, of creating agendas and also killing each other’s darlings in order to find a body of curation together. We are good together, being both pretty direct and upfront, yet willing to compromise. Karina likes to be on an epic artistic journey, seeing what is at hand for the moment, and Pontus likes to create materials, worlds and reformat the process into something more artistic than administrative. We are artists that are making a festival, this ‘something’ we are dealing with while we are working. But hospitality and reforming choreographic structures is an interest we have in common.
We feel that there are good things happening within the dance community these days, and we want to bring our own utopias to the table. We have created a very maximized program of different artistic forms and contents in order to make the audience come, be intrigued and to stay with us. We want to create the bumpy rides, in a nice way. We think that more is more, and we just need an audience that agrees. One desire is that we want people interested in art in general to visit the choreographic spaces and works. We want to share an idea that dance and choreography is not something to only come and watch, but that it is a church we are building together to be in groups and to experience the ‘here’ and ‘now’ and face the identities we are in this very moment, together. The artists are coming with their proposals of their here and now, and we can relate in relation to their proposals. To assume a community is one, but more interesting is how we are a community. “
